A&S Competitions

  1. Join the Navy! Join either the Lochmere or Storvik navies with your best depiction of a ship (or group of ships). Each individual entry is worth a point. Youth! You can turn the tide! Each youth entry is worth two points. Your ship depiction can be anything. Please include at least minimum documentation. If edible, please include a list of ingredients and enough bite size portions for the populace to sample and a reserve for the Baronage (be aware that the Baronage have allergies and dietary restrictions). Each Baronage will then choose their flagship from the entries on their side.
  2. Tacking! Calling all bakers! Bake your best and tastiest hardtack to feed a Navy! Provide a list of ingredients and enough bite size portions for the populace to sample as the Navy (populace) will choose the hardtack they will eat on a long journey.
  3. Open Display: Do you have a work in progress you’d like to show off? How about a recently completed project that doesn’t fit a competition category? Come display it. Leave out a notebook or sheet of paper if you would like comments.

Classes: Classes at no extra charge, some classes might have a small fee for materials.

Bardic: Led by Lady Eilionora: Start with your best maritime song, story, or poem. This will be a fun, low stakes pick/pass/play around the circle. Come and go as wanted over the two hour circle.

Dancing: Led by Master Stefan of Cambion: Come and join friends in some whirls around the deck.

The Mary Rose: Taught by Baron Linhart Von Marburg: This class will include a brief overview of the history of the Mary Rose and its excavation followed by a review of a selection of its artifacts most relevant to SCA life.

Period-style leather decoration: Creased and stamped designs

Taught by Faolan Mac Raghnaill

Learn how to sculpt and decorate leather in a period style!

This class will cover the basics of using a stylus and a simple background stamping tool to create raised tooling on a vegetable-tanned leather coaster. Historical tools, methods, and extant examples of this technique will be discussed, along with what modern tools/materials can be used to achieve the same look.

Costs: $4 for supplies. (If cost is a barrier, please reach out to Eilionora and Faolan)

Class size: There are enough mallets for 10 people. More participants are welcome, but may have to share tools, or may bring their own mallet (a rubber mallet, rawhide mallet, crab mallet, etc, will work)

Required materials: Materials will be provided. However, if they have their own leatherworking tools, they can bring them along. There will be premade designs available, but you can also use a simple 3×3” outline design of your own.

Age restrictions: 13 years +. This class will be using tools, mallets and potentially sharp objects and is most suitable for teenagers-adults.

Interactive Fun: Led by Elisena the Graceless:
Help Nessie keep the Kraken at bay! An interactive subtly includes a ring toss competition with a tasty treat as a prize.

Start with a brief lesson on subtleties then form teams to keep the Kraken at bay!

Teams should consist of at least 3 people AND each team MUST have at least one person under the age of 18 who can compete on multiple teams. Adults are asked to compete on only one team. Fastest time roping the tentacles wins in a head-to-head challenge. Practice time is available before the competition starts if one wants to try it out.

Water Battle:

Pick your team and battle against the other team. Whoever sinks the other team’s fleet wins. No res battle, scenario runs up to three times, then just a free for all until time runs out.W

Teams:

Warm (pink, red, orange, yellow) colors vs cool (green, blue, indigo, violet) colors

Boats: start with

(1) of two

(3) of three

(2) of four

(1) of five

Total of 24 people in boats

Rules:

  1. All underhand throws
  2. Nothing to the face. Once will be ruled accidental, twice and you are out of the game.
  3. Boats: one hand must be gripping the tablecloth at all times. If you are hit, you must drop all ammunition and hold the tablecloth with both hands. For even boats, if half the boat is hit, you can no longer move about. For odd boats, the number is 2/3. If everyone is hit, the boat sinks and now is an obstacle. You can choose to remain standing, sit down, or die dramatically. Note that if you go low, the chances of an accidental head shot may increase.
  4. Gleaning: you may glean your color ammunition but anything picked up must be taken to your team’s bucket to be dunked before being used again.
  5. Water balloons and any type of water guns are not permitted. Water sponges and reusable balls will be used and you can bring your own if desired. Ensure they are labeled.
